WHFBR Dark Elves (new) vs Skaven 2500p

Again it was time for Inger Helene to test her Dark Elf rooster.  Our guest, Ole, eager to learn more, and even more happy to find out that the new “Warhammer army book Dwarfs” are rumoured to arrive early in 2014J

This time I brought along my Skaven. Being one of the older Army Books, but very good in 8th edition (my opinion anyway), I figure it is a good idea to use it while the current rules apply. Also, this is perhaps the army I have enjoyed most in building and painting, so I looked forward to test it against the “new” Dark Elves.

DEPLOYMENT

The Skaven army took up position to the east. From north east to south east:
Rat Dart
Warp Lightning Cannon
40 Slaves with Engineer (Lv 1)
Hellpit
40 Slaves
35 Clanrats with Grey Seer (Lv4)
Hellpit
Plague Priest (Lv1) with Plague Furnace and 40 Plague Monks
-       behind the unit 23 Clanrats with BSB and Warlord
40 Slaves
40 Slaves with Engineer
Rat Dart

The Dark Elves army took up position to the vest. From north vest to south vest:
5 Coldone Knights
23 Witch Elves with Hag and Cauldron of Blood (BSB)
            - behind the unit 25 Warriors with Lv4
40 Corsairs
War Hydra
20 Crossbows
19 Crossbows with Lv1

THE BATTLE

The Skaven went first, the whole of the army moving forwards. Both of the Hellpits surged forward, a little to fare forward so they where in a forward position without backup (I must remember to deploy them a little further back). The Skaven move hindered the Dark Elves in charging the Plague Furnace with the Witch Elves, a close combat the Skaven where sure they would loose. In short, Ratdart and Slaves moved against the crossbows, Slaves moved in on the Warhydra (redirecting), Plague Monks moved in on the Corsairs, Slaves and Hellpit moved against the Witch Elves, Slaves flanking the advance, and finally the last Hellpit and Slave unit moved against the knights. It was a brutal magic phase! “Plague” killed of half of the Corsair, Witch Elf and Warrior unit with the Lv4! I felt bad for my opponent. However, it was cast with irresistible force, the magic back clash killing of some Skaven Clanrats, Slaves, a Plague Monk, and causing two wounds on the Grey Seer! The shooting was – crap. The Warlord consulted the Greyseer, banners where reviled, and it started raining….

The Dark Elves managed all of their Panic Tests, and continued their battle plan. The Witch Elves charged the Hellpit in centre. The Corsairs moved forward towards the Plague Furnace. The Knights did not managed to control their mounts, which decided to feed on some grass (stupid). The Crossbow units adjusted their position. The Skaven was very lucky that the knights did not manage to charge to lone Hellpit. Dark Magic proved ineffective, but managed to force the Skaven army to use their Dispel Scroll. Shooting was severely hindered by the pouring rain, only managing to kill a Giant rat and some slaves! By a miracle, the lone Hellpit in centre managed its regen saves and where left with two wounds (and managed its stubborn test). The Dark Elves prepared for the onslaught of living flesh!

It stopped raining. To the south the Skaven Ratdart moved close to the Crossbow unit, forcing it to either charge ore gun them down. The Slave unit with Engineer moved in on the second Crossbow unit, pretty much doing the same. Slave unit moved close to the Warhydra in a redirect position. The Plague Monks/Plague Furnace charged the Corsairs, Slaves charged the Witch Elves and the Hellpit to the North charged the Witch Elves in the flank. To the far north the Rat Dart and Slaves moved in on the Knights in a redirect position (away from centre). This turn, the dreaded 13th spell killed of the Warrior unit with the Lv4 down to one warrior and the Lv4! The warp Lightning Cannon managed to kill two Knights. In close combat the Plague Monks and Plague Furnace broke the Corsairs, run them down and over runned into the Lv4 and her Warrior companion. The Witch Elves managed to kill one of the Hellpits, but where almost whipped out, broke and where cut down!

The Dark Elves despaired! The War Hydra attacked the Slaves, the Knights charged the Slaves to the north, and the Crossbow units adjusted their position towards centre. The Lv2 killed the Ratdart to the south with magic, but unfortunately, but she was killed in the magical backlash from irresistible force! The back clash also killed of several Crossbow warriors in both the Crossbow units, resulting in one of the units panicking and fleeing! The Lv4 killed of 11 Plague Monks! The remaining Crossbow unit killed of some Slaves. In close combat the Warhydra started killing of Slaves, but not nearly enough to break them. The Plague unit overrun only “clipped” the Lv4, and surprisingly, the Lv4 held her ground! The Knights to the north killed of some Slaves, but they held their ground (the Knights forgetting to single out the Engineer in close combat giving the unit high Ld.).  The Plague unit reformed.

The Skaven Hellpit to the north slammed into the side of the Knights. The Slaves in centre started heading south to aid in the fight against the Crossbows two turns down the game…. The Slaves to the south charged the fleeing crossbows, which had to continue to flee, halted 2 inch from the table edge! Damn, the Slaves failed their “redirect” roll and so could not charge the other Crossbow unit. Nothing eventful happened in the magic phase except the Warhydra loosing one in toughness from “Wither” and the Warp Lightning Cannon misfiring (nothing happened). The Plague Unit cut down the Lv4. The Hellpit and Slaves to the north killed of the Knights. The Slaves centre held against the Warhydra.

The Dark Elf general now only had two Crossbow units (damaged) and the Warhydra left, facing 4 Slave Units, Plague unit at ½ Strength, 2 Clanrat units and a Hellpit. The Dark Elf general was hungry, for food, could not find a way to avoid a massacre, and decided to fold.

Skaven victory!

Comments:

Both generals control units with fear and terror. It is important to make use of these assets and to remember to make a point out of them during the game as they can affect the outcome of a combat. We both forgot this turn two (did remember turn one and three).

The Dark Elf general must remember that Engineers "left in the front row" can be singled out in close combat.

The aftermath:

The Dark Elf general realized that using her old list, with the current Army Book, is not an optimal use of the new rules or old units, deciding to “rebuild” the army with a different setup. The best of luck, and looking forward to our next game!

Island of blood intro game

This is some photos from a game with the Island of blood box models.
I showed the game to "non gamer friends"

I add two  spawn as Ogre rats to equalize the forces.
Also the griffon is a great eagle.
Armies is approx. 820 p

Deployment  High Elf

Deployment   Skaven
 Skaven goes first.....
 .....and kill some elfs
 High  elf counter
 Skaven runs
Final blow and the cavalry is gone.

A brave charge of the High elf general.
A lot of bad luck from the High elf and the general is gone.
The mage survive a warp flame attack.
Sperman hunt down some rat ogres.
 Swordmasters take their  prey
 The rats are running.
Highe elf prepare for the final attack.

Wind mortar take some last  kills
Game over. After a very bad start the tied turned to victory for the high  elf.

This was fun and a new experience for me to try to teach the game.
I hope the players enjoyed it too. But I think it is way to much to hope for that they become gamers too.

Skaven army progress

What to do while waiting for the next shipment from Maelstrom? Oh – nothing like finishing some more rats….

First up a unit of 25 Clanrats with Full Command, Spear and Shields. An excellent unit when those “Dreaded 13th spells” go off!

Next, 15 Clanrats with Full Command, Hand weapon and Shields. This unit is of course to small, but will enable me to field 3 X 30 Clanrats with Full command, Hand weapons and Shields.
Finally, my # 6 Rat Ogre. Finally able to field a decent size unit of these mutated vermin’s….

WHFB - gaming evening

-->
In all the excitement, I guess we forgot to take pictures. 6 players had an all day / evening / night gaming event.

The army’s present: Vampire Counts, Orks, Daemons of Chaos, Skaven, Dark Elves and Ogres.

I managed to get in two games. First up was the Dark Elves. My Skaven army got totally trashed by the Dark Elves who managed to break my line, not at least thanks to my cannons not hitting anything, but mostly because my opponent played better than me! Second up was Ogres. A nasty army with those large blocks of things you don’t want deep into your line. Well - again my Cannons blew them selves up (at least one did…), but I managed to mass my forces against one after one unit, withering the army down to a solid victory.

-->
Great opponents and a very nice evening!

WHFB Daemons of Chaos vs Skaven 2500p

DEPLOYMENT

The Daemons of Chaos deployed first, to the north. From the North vest: Seekers, Pink Horrors with Lv2 Herald of Tzeentch, Daemonettes of Slaanesh, Blood Crushers of Khorne, Daemonettes of Slaanesh and a Lv2 Daemon Prince. Behind each unit of Daemonettes of Slaanesh, units of Bloodletters of Khorne.

Skaven deployed to the south. From the South vest: Skaven Slaves with Engineer, Slaves, Slaves with Lv4 Grey Seer, Hellpit, Storm Vermin, Lv1 Plague Priest with Plague Furnace and Plague Monks, Slaves with Lv1 Engineer and the Doomwheel. Behind the lines, two Warp Lighting cannons and in centre a unit of Clanrats with Warlord and BSB. A unit of Gutter runners hides inside a forest to the east.

THE BATTLE

The Skaven army moves towards the Daemon army. The Hellpit rolls low, getting bugged down behind a building exposing has flank in turn 2, meaning he will have to turn around and find another way into battle (damn). The DoomWheele also rolls low (damn). The cannons take out several Blood Crushers (yes). Warp Lightning wounds the Daemon Prince. The Grey Seer fails to cast the 13th spell. The DoomWheele fails its Ld test and opens fire on the Gutter Runners. 3 gets killed, they fail their Ld test, and falls back!

The Daemons moves forward, but to the Skaven Warlords grate surprise, does not march at full speed. They keep their distance meaning that the Cannons get one more turn to shoot. The magic phase is uneventful.

The Hellpit turns around and smashes into the centre Slave unit, killing a rank. Oh well, they are only – slaves. The Gutter Runners does not manage to rally! The Slave units adjust their position. Moving one unit into the wood, and close to a building, only one unit from the Daemon army will be able to charge next turn. To the east the DoomWheele drives past the Daemon prince, the Plague Monks and Slaves moving forward. In the magic phase the Grey Seer cast Death Frenzy on the Storm Vermin, killing 5 of them. Again he fails casting the 13th spell. The engineer fires he’s Doomrocket killing half of the Daemonettes to the northeast. The DoomWheele wounds the Daemon prince 3 times, but it manages all 3 Ward saves (damn). The Cannons fare better, killing another two Blood Crushers.

The Seekers charge the Slaves to the southwest, the Daemonettes charge the Slaves in the forest, and the Daemonettes to the northeast charge the Plague Monks. The Daemon prince Charge the Slaves to the far northeast in the flank. The Blood Crushers fail their charge! Again the Skaven Warlord is Magic missiles kill of several Slaves in the unengaged centre unit. Being Steadfast, all Slave units manage to hold. The Plague Monks kills of the Daemonettes.

The Plague Monks charge the Bloodletters to the northeast, the DoomWheele charges the Daemon prince (locked with the Slaves). The Grey Seers leaves the Slaves and fly over the table behind enemy lines. The Gutter Runners rally (finally). The Hellpit runs vest in order to get into position later in the game (damn building). The Grey Seer again fails to cast the 13th spell (he need a big bottle of something…). Nothing eventful in the magic ore-shooting phase. The Doomwheel and Slaves kills of the Daemon Prince. The Plague Monks let loose their Plague Banner and wipes out the Blood Letters. The two Slaves units to the west hold the Seekers and the Daemonettes. Another 5 Storm Vermin dies to the effect of death Frenzy.

The remaining Herald of Khorne on a Juggernaut charges and wipes out the Storm Vermin. Hmmm….. This is the 3 game they fail to get their points value back…. The Blood letters in centre finally turns and moves behind the building towards the Slaves to the east. Nothing to eventful in the magic phase.

The Plague Monks turn around heading west towards centre. The Hellpit goes north into the wood (making its test). The Grey Seer moves past the Pink Horrors, but again fails to cast the 13th spell. Bad Grey Seer! The Slaves to the east moves past vest to face the Herald of Khorne. One cannon misfires (nothing bad happens) and the other does not manage to kill the Herald. The Slaves kills the Seekers and reform towards centre. The DoomWheele keep its distance.

The Pink Horrors turn around threatening the Grey Seer. The Bloodletters close in on the Slaves. The Daemonettes in centre kills the Slaves and reform towards the next Slave unit. Uneventful magic phase.

The Grey Seer jumps over the Pink Horrors. The Slaves and Hellpit Charges the remaining Daemonettes unit. The Plague Monks charge the Bloodletters in the side. The Slaves to the east charge the Herald. Finally the 13th spell goes of, and the Pink Horrors are transformed into RATS. The Plague Monks kills the Bloodletters. The Slaves defeat the herald. The Slaves and Hellpit wipe out the Daemonettes.

It is over. The Daemons of Chaos army is wiped out.

Comments:

I am a bit surprised the Daemons of Chaos general did push harder in turn two, and that he did not try to go around the building earlier in the game. I am also surprised that I “clogged” the advance on my own Hellpit resulting in him only entering combat turn 5! I am finished with the Storm Vermin. The only thing they have done the last three games are – dying. And my Grey Seer needs to drink something…

WHFB Dark Elves vs Skaven 2500p

BETRAIL!!!

DEPLOYMENT

Once again the Dark Elves faces the Vermin menace! Having experienced several defeats and the unfortunate effects of how impassable terrain can slow down the advance, the Supreme Sorceress chose to do battle over an almost open field.

Dark Elves; From the north vest: Cold One Chariot, Witch Elves, War Hydra, Cold One Chariot, Corsairs, Crossbow Warriors, Cold One Knights and yet another unit of Crossbow Warriors. Behind the lines, in centre, Caldron of Blood and a Spear Warrior unit (with the Supreme Sorceress). Two unit of Harpy’s lurking behind the lines. To the north east a Bolt Thrower takes position on a hill.

Skaven; From south vest: Hellpit, Storm Vermin, Slaves, Plague Monks with the Plague Furnace and Plague Priest, Warp Lightning Cannon, Clanrats with BSB and the Grey Seer, Slaves, Hellpit and more Slaves with Engineer. Two units of Gutter Runners in reserve.
 THE BATTLE

Skaven got first turn, the whole army (except the Clanrats) moved at full speed forward towards the dark Elf battle line. Magic; The Engineer managed to kill 3 out of 5 Cold One Knights using Warp Lightning. Looking good! The Grey Seer manages to cast the “13´spell” with irresistible force, killing a huge amount of Corsairs. Looking very good! But, the magical backlash – kills him! Not good!!! The Cannon takes out several Spear Warriors (did not have line of sight to the War Hydra – idiots). The Doom Rocket – 4 dice – and yes – 3 “ones”. Damn thing. It never works. The Dark Elves manages all their tests.

The Dark Elves moves forward, establishing their battle line in centre using forests as cover. That Supreme Sorceress is a sneaky bitch;) Nothing to bad happening in the magic phase. As the rain pores down the shooting does not manage anything decisive, except the Hellpit to the north loosing two wounds. The Cold One Chariot to the south charges the Hellpit, inflicting two wounds, only suffering one in return!

Without the Ld “bobble” from the army general, the Skaven finds the battle line to spread out to secure a “steadfast” battle line. It was only one way to go – all in – and try to break the centre line of the dark Elf battle line, going for an overrun into the Supreme Sorceress and her Spear warriors! Ok – charge. The Plague Furnace has to move through the forest. Dangerous terrain – 1! D6 wounds – 6! Destroyed! I cant believe this! The Hellpit to the northeast does not manage to reach the Crossbow Warriors (damn random). The Slaves charges the Harpy’s in the forest, they flee to safety (sneaky), the Slaves redirect into the centre Crossbow Warrior unit. The rain continues to pore down, the cannon cannot see through it! One unit of Gutter Runners enters behind the Bolt thrower, killing it with poison slingshots. Magic, with the Grey Seer gone, well – nothing to damaging. Close combat then; The Hellpit to the south beats the Cold One Chariot, but does not manage to overrun it. Damn! In centre, not even the “Plague Banner” manages to secure a victory for the Plague Monks. They lose combat, are out of range from the BSB (idiots), flee, get overrun and are all slaughtered! Damn! Inside the wood to centre east the Slaves does not manage to win over the Crossbow Warriors! Despite being Steadfast, their pore Ld of 5 (2 + 3 Ranks), and being without the range of the BSB (and no generals around), proves fatal, and they “blow up”!

That was pretty much it. In the following Dark Elf turn it stopped raining. Hell Pits and Clanrats took heavy fire, and the Supreme Sorceress relatively unhindered caste Hex spells on all nearby Skaven units, reducing their Strength and Toughness. The Witches engaged the hell Pit, lost and where cut down. The War Hydra and Chariot finished a Slave unit.

In a last desperate attempt the Hellpit to the northeast charged into, and killed, the last two Cold One Knights. The Clanrats finally left the hill and moved towards centre, surviving the sheer slope of rocky terrain. The Hellpit to the South vest charged the War Hydra, and the Storm Vermin charged the Corsairs. Again the Skaven units did not mange to win any engagements, and again with using Hex spells and flank charges, the Dark Elf’s managed to kill of the Storm Vermin.

Having only a small Clanrat unit, some Slaves and two heavily damaged Hell Pits left, The Skaven warlord felt betrayed by his own keen. Betrayals cannot be accepted, and to set an example he decided to execute all his remaining units!

Victory went to the Dark Elves. Smart deployment, clever use of Magic and otherwise skilful use of the dark Elf units, would have secured a solid Victory (that would possibly turn into a massacre, so we can considered to be one). Killing the Grey Seer (army general and best magical defence) proved devastating to the Skaven army. Also loosing all wounds on the Plague Furnace from a terrain test was just…. However, this was a very fun (funny) game with lots of laughter, and it teaches my a lesson. Hellpits are good, but if you don’t get into contact (random is – random), and if you roll low on the attack ability chart (random is – again random), they are hardly worth their points. 2 of them are a real big point sink. Also, the Grey Seer should not be the General, and the Slaves need more backing up.

WHFB Dark Elves vs Skaven 2500p

Once again the Dark Elves faces the Skaven! Having recruited a new Supreme Sorceress, the Dark Elves take to the battlefield confident they will finish of the vermin lurking around the old farmhouse! Or will they…?

DEPLOYMENT

The Dark Elves deploy (once again) to the north of the battlefield. From the north vest: Cold One Chariot, Cold one Knights, Witch Elves, Spearmen with the Supreme Sorceress, Corsairs, Cauldron of Blood, 2 units of Warriors with reaper cross bows, a bolt thrower and finally a Cold One Chariot. On each flank, behind the lies, a unit of Harpies.

Facing the Dark Elf army, from south vest: Slaves, a Hell pit, Stormvermin, more Slaves, a Cannon, Clanrats with BSB and Grey Seer, Plague Furnace with Plague Priest, even more Slaves (with Warlock) and ridiculously more Slaves (with warlock) and finally a Cannon. Two units of Gutter Runners in reserve.

THE BATTLE

Being faster and more agile, the Dark Elves go first, moving all units forward at full speed, except the Spearmen and Crossbow units. The Harpies to the south hide behind the building threatening the Cannon on centre hill. To the east the harpies close in on the Cannon on the hill to the fare east. The young Supreme Sorceress manage to kill of some of the Plague Monks, taking a wound and killing some Spearmen in the Backlash. A hale of bolts and arrows inflict damage more damage to the Plague Monks.

The Skaven Army advances at full speed. Transfixed by the Supreme Sorceress, they forget to call upon the rain. The Hell pit overloads and run almost straight over no-mans land and stops in front of the hard hitting dark Elves units (idiot!). A unit of Slaves to the north charge the Harpies who in turn flee to safety. The Plague Furnace does its best to close in on the Corsairs. The Grey Seer does not manage to call upon the 13th one. Cannons and the Doom Rocket kill of several Crossbow warriors. The Supreme Sorceress despairs (temporarily).

The Dark Elves surge forward. The Corsairs engage a centre unit of Slaves; the Harpies moving over the Skaven Line ready to assault the Cannon next turn. The Chariot and the Cold One Knights to the vest moves past the farmhouse making ready for a fight nest turn. To the northeast the Crossbow adjust their position. Again the Supreme Sorceress, eager to prove herself, unleash the Dark Powers of magic, killing Plague Monks and Slaves, again killing several of her own Spearmen and losing yet another wound in the backlash. The shooting units target the Plague Monks and Slaves to the north, killing several, but not enough! The Witch Elves attack the Hell pit taking it down to two wounds only loosing five in return. The Corsairs kill of half the Skaven Slaves in centre, but they hold.

The Plague Priest with his Plague Furnace and Plague Monks decide to attach the flank of the Corsair in centre. However, with only 4 Ranks only a small portion of the Monks get to fight. To the north east a Slave unit manages to charge one of the Crossbow units. The Slaves to the south manages to charge a Cold One Chariot, the Cold One Knights being bystanders. All other Skaven units surge forwards. Again the Grey Seer does not manage anything, but the Skaven Warlock to the north manages to kill of a Cold One Chariot with “Warp Lightning”. The Cannons does not mange anything! In close combat the Hell pit takes another wound and does not manage to inflict severer casualties to the Witch Elves. The Corsairs cut down the Skaven Slaves and kills of several Plague Monks, who in turn does not manage to kill off enough Corsairs to win the combat. The Skaven Slaves explode, killing foes and friend alike. The Slaves to the east inflicts casualties to the Crossbow armed warriors, but they manage to hold their ground. Damn parry saves; damn ward saves from the Cold run on the Corsairs… The Slaves to the vest manages to win the combat over the Cold One Chariot, but does not manage to cut it down while fleeing.

The Cold One Knights charge the brave Slaves to the vest, winning the combat. Being out of range of the General and BSB – they explode! In centre the Witch Elves kill of the Hell Pit – ore so they think… The Corsairs makes a swift reform aliening with the Plague Monks. Both side takes heavy casualties. In centre the Supreme Sorceress kills herself when again unleashing the Dark Powers of Magic at full strength! The Crossbow men to the east fires at the unengaged Slave unit closing in on them.

To Horrible to Die. D6 = 6. The Hell pit emerges once again, with 2 wounds. The Stormvermin enters the centre of the battlefield, the Hell pit preventing them from charging. Finally, the Skaven general remembers to call on his reserves, they entering the field to the north centre opening fire, killing some archers. The Grey Seer finally manages to spread decease on the dark Elves, killing several Crossbow warriors and some Spearmen. To the north the Harpies are cut down by Slaves and the other unit of Slaves deafest the other unit of Crossbowmen, but they manage to retreat. The bolt thrower succumbs to the Slaves.

Eager to revenge the Supreme Sorcerer, The Witch Elves assault the Storm Vermin, supported by a Cold One Chariot. The charge brings the Witch Elves down to one Rank, but they manage to win the combat with the assistance by the Cold One Chariot. Behind them, the Cold One Knights close in; ready to charge the Storm Vermin from behind next turn.

In centre, the Skaven army massed against the remaining Corsairs, the Hell pit reaching them from behind. The combined attack killed them off. To the northeast, the Slaves and Hell pit destroyed the Crossbow unit, converging on the remaining unit. The Gutter Runners killed several Dark Elves with their poisoned slings. Again, the Grey Seer failed to inflict significant damage, and again the Cannons did – nothing (except one blowing itself up). Did we not pay the weapon teams enough? The Storm Vermin killed of the remaining Witch Elves.

The Dark Elf Spearmen assaulted the Storm Vermin, and the Cold One Knights assaulted them from behind. The Charge was devastating. The remaining Storm Vermin fled, pursued by the Cold One Knights. The Spearmen consolidating to take the inevitable charge from the Plague Monks. The Hell Pit is finally destroyed.

The Plague Monks charged the Spearmen, almost whipping them out. The Storm Vermin did not manage to rally, fleeing the battle. The remaining Slaves and the Clanrat unit adjusted their position, so that they could face the attack from Harpies ore other remaining units (witch ones…?).

The Harpies attacked the Clanrats, being cut down. The Plague Furnace, the Monks and a unit of Gutter Runners fought with the Cold run, not inflicting significant damage either way.

The game ended. The Dark Elves had two remaining units left, Cold One Knights and the Cold run. The Skaven had two units of Gutter Runners Left, the Plague Priest, his Plague Furnace and Plague Monks, a Slave unit, One Cannon and the Clanrats including the BSB and Grey Seer. A bloody battle indeed!

The Skaven Army once again triumphed, but by a far less margin that the previous engagement. The Skaven general expect an even harder fought battle next time. Next time….
