WHFB – gaming evenings

With the upcoming new High Elf Amy Book it felt right to end an era with a couple of games!

I am not a typical tournament player, but do like to participate on different forums in order to utilize my army’s in the best way. Personally I think the current High Elf Army Book was great in 7th edition, but not so much in 8th edition, despite that the “always strike first” is awesome. Why – the points cost making it almost imposable to field large units! Of course, it is an old Army Book (I guess that is why it is being replaced….), but I think in general the High Elves are overpriced, especially when they are compared against their darker keen. Oh sure – always strikes first – but hey – they have eternal hatred, cheaper armour, shoot harder and field more models (and have cheap monsters). I hope this will balance better with the new Army Book.

Oh well, this was not meant to be a rant. On the contrary, I have enjoyed the current edition of the High Elf Army Book, and most of the time I have had success with it on the battlefield. My last three games then; I am not going to post a full report but make some comments and show some photos.

First game this weekend was against Inger Helene’s Dark Elves. It started very well (for the High Elves). The Book of Hoeth in combination with powerful spells… well, I wiped out over half a large unit of Wyches turn one…. I also did fairly well with magic turn two, and had the upper hand by the end of turn two. The only unit that did not do anything was a unit of 20 archers (unless they improve in the new Army Book I am going to leave them at home). But then it changed. Poison attacks, Eternal hatred, Sea cloaks and 5+ Ward save from the Caldron, well – the Dark Elves slowly turned the game around for a victory.

Second game this weekend again was against Inger Helene’s Dark Elves. I had changed my list from the day before, fielding a unit I normally do nut use. Out with a unit of Dragon Princes and some other stuff, and in with Sword Masters. Out with archers and in with more spearmen. It was time fore revenge! I “tricked” my opponent castling in one corner whilst the Dark Elves spread out having to spend several turns in order to bring the full weight of their points value against my units. That was the plan anyway… Again the High Elves magic was brutal. First turn cutting down over half a unit of spearmen, and killing the Lv4 Soursorer at the same time! Mid way turn three the High Elves fared pretty good, but then – a turn with bad dice roll in close combat and – history repeating itself. Again a great game, but damn….. Oh well, my opponent is always fun play against, and played a great game rethinking her tactics and turning the game around. I fill face her army again with brand new rules in not a to distant future! Looking forward to a rematch Inger Helene!

Others attended the gaming evening that Dag hosted of course (thank you Dag for hosting the gathering, for lunch and a nice dinner). Here is a picture of Dag´s Daemons facing of against Haakans Beastmen army. In the end, Haakans Beastmen where victorious. I bet Dag will have his revenge once he comes to grips with he’s new Army Book;)

Third game this weekend was against Haakans Beastmen army. With a flying monster, large units in horde formation, tons of buff spells and some great chariots and skirmishers, I dreaded meeting this army. In the beginning it was the Beastmen who had the upper hand, mostly due to the Eagles not performing as well as they should, and my Magic not being to effective. Once the units/battle lines clashed in centre turn three this game became a real nail-biter! Really bloody as loads of models on each side became casualties. Both of the generals tried to use their augment spells in preference to direct damage by this point, making it even more exciting as an otherwise seemingly obvious engagement was turned around. By the end of turn 5 the High Elves somehow had turned the game around, and by turn 6 only one unit of the beasts remained (alongside some skirmishers). But the victory came at a price. Spearmen units where wiped out and all other units had taken HEAVY casualties. I think both me and my opponent enjoyed this game so munch we really did not care who won, because this was one of those games that where so well fought on both sides, in gentlemen style gaming, and with all the excitement one could hope fore. In one turn I thought a unit would win, and then suddenly, that unit had the upper hand next turn, and so it went back on forth all across the battlefield!

I could not have asked to have a better game to end an era with the current High Elves Army Book!

Warriors of Chaos – army progress # 4 - Dogs of War

It has been a while! First; I have been working on two new gaming tables (one dedicated 40K City of Death Gaming Table, and one Desert Gaming Table that can be used in all of the game systems), this was time consuming. Pictures can be seen in posts on “The Team Stormbolter Blogg”, se link below. Secondly, as soon as I realised there where about to be realised a new Army Book, I put the project on hold. But when I did get hood of the new book it really motivated me to pick up the slack and get back into fantasy war gaming. And with the High Elves coming up with a new Army Book next month, well, I need to hurry.

Yesterday I painted up the first batch of models in my new Warriors of Chaos army. I sometimes think that the GW designers go “to fare” when it comes to spikes and horns etc. I like war hounds etc to have the “wolf” look, and therefore decided to skip the horns etc, filling inn all the gaps and slots with green stuff. Anyway, this is how they turned out.

Next up will be my Chaos Marauders.

Cheers,
Ørnulv

Alliance 2013 tournament summary

I played Alliance tournament last weekend

My army

Slagutermaster

Brusier BSB

8 Iron guts

8 Ogres

6 Leadbelchers

3 morfang

3 x 1 sabertusks

This is a team tournament

10 teams with  3 player each entered. 1800p fore each player.
Slightly smaller than normal.

Little nervous I was as I have one of Norway's best Warhammer players on teams. But he opens by saying that he is playing Wood Elf for this is a tournament we will play only for fun    -puhhh.
Team Unknown consist of: a Wood Elf, Orc and  Goblins, and myself playing  Ogres. None  of us knew no other  before.

It was played with open list.  Sorry I do not have any copy of my opponets lists

Game 1

Vs Skaven

Grey seer

A priest with a furnace

Two catapults a warplightning cannon.

Slaves slaves slaves+ gutter runners. Some more but I do not remember the list,
This is a pretty soft player. I have never faced him before.
I started the game very badly. When I deployed terrible wrong.

Skaven deployed almost everything In a corner.

I Managed to fix up the situation a while. I shot some rats

Ironguts get in to the Furnace almost destroyed it.

Gutter runner kills the morfang with shooting attacks.

But in the fourth round miscast magic for the third time and my slaughter master was gone. Then I tangled myself up in a duel. I lost my BSB due to that. I killed rat horde after rat horde but they are not worth anything. : o) I lost with 4-16.
But my team won in  total.

Game 2
Vs  WoC
This player I have met two times before, once 0-20 loss and I won with 20-0 second game. This gona be interesting. He has a large unit of nurgel warriors, a flying nurgel deamon prince, with Death magic,BSB on disk and two chimeras + two units of dogs.

WoC go first

Offeseive.

I lost some Ogres due to magic. Nothing more
I  shot down a chimera  by Leadbelcher directly. Morfang strikes his BSB and the other chimera  with help of magic from slaughterrmaster.

His deamon prince is not much to do with. I lost my ogres and my leadbelcher to that model.
With some luck with placing my saber tusks I drag him out of position. This helps a lot. I get a flank charge on his warriors with my iron guts.

A few round s with combat and his warriors lost their nerves I hunt them down.

I finally wins with 13-7 My team also wins overall.

Game 3

Vs Dark elf

Now we are high on the list and will now meet on the paper the strongest team. This team is in for total victory.
They have a Lizardmen Army who we know will beat all our armies. We think, however, that the Orcs and goblins can get with a few points
My lot fell on the Dark Elf. This is against a very good player. With a lot of small units crossbows, assassins and  shades.  A spearmen unit and harpies.  Also death magic.
Dark Elf  begins.

In the first round I lost  50% of my Iron gusts due to purple sun bad bad bad. But He could not cause a single wound by his crossbows.

I had been careful with my deployment.
I marched everything forward. Losing many ogres. I cast  Troll guts spell(Re gene)l in each round. This is great. Saves me a lot.

The purple sun is thrown again and again I dispelled one time and he fail twice luck for me. I finally arrived in his main line. I grind slowly down the Dark Elf. I lose some combats, but now I roll LD snake eye as never before. : o) But in round five it looks bad. Only few ogres left and surrounded by Dark Elf. Then my dice was with me. I take down his general and stomped apart a unit of spearmen. Also a wizard went down. Victory to me with 13-7: o) Victory is sweet and sweeter it becomes when he says that he designed for the army to take out ogres.

The others on the team my lost bad.  We lose, however overall.

I only saved the honor.

Day 2
Game 4

Vs High elf

Magic lv2 + lv 1 + lv1 all with lore of light.

27 Whitelions+ approx 20 spaerman.

3 eagles, 2 units of archers
My lot fell on HE for me. I did not want to face this army, It is team play, So my team mates believe that they could beat their opponents. Team games are exciting.

This is also a soft player.

He has a lot of magic. He deployed everything in a corner and throw spells and shooting at me. I am coming quickly into line. But this little elfs are great warriors too. I take out the archer and the white lions below 50% I have no chance to get in to his bunker spearmen.

We only  played five turns before time runs out. Ends 10-10 I'm happy with that. I think actually I could have won if we played another round.

My team win, however, total

Now it's exciting we are in third place, but it is different about 10p from second to fifth place

Game 5
We meet the leading team.. They have  won this before and surely will do it again. Very strong players. Our captain means  he can beat Thires s WoC. Our s Orc and Goblin will face a horde skaven army.

I got Vampire Counts.

Vampite lv 4 + lv1 + v1 (both lv 1 got death magic)

6 Crypt Horrors

2 units of zombie 1 unit of  skeleton warriors+ bats

I get a down for a while because I have not met them since 7 ed.
The captain believe that will be fine. Play carefully and get the points. Is the order.

I face a pure tournament player, We have decent and exciting game it becomes real fun. Two howling Terrorgheist bring some troubles to me. But it turns out that it was it. The other zombies and skeletons turned into dust under the stomping ogres

I take out one Terrorgheist   with my BSB. The other one is down to 2 wounds. I lost my leadis to the Crypt Horrors.
Highlight is when one of my saber tusk eats a vampier: o)
21p sabertusk to about 105 p vampire.

It ends with a loss of 9-11 - It isOK. I realize that I could have won if I knew more about Vampire count and its models.

We played draw t against this team.
These players organize a tournament in Gjøvik this summer and I was asked to come there. I will be there.

Tournament winners Is team that we met in round three
Number  two is team that we met in round five.
Then is it a only 4 p from third 163p fifth place 159
We took fifth place.

We are satisfied with the place.

Summary NM 2013 Tournament

The NM tournament is over. It was fantastic weekend with a lot of gaming and fellow hobbyist. 76 WHFB players.
I enter this tournament to have fun and to face other players and armies. I have a lot of respect with some names on the lists. A lot of them are good players.

Saturday morning I entered the venue and I was overwhelmed of all the people and gaming tables. Hobby stands and demo tables for different games. This is a short note on each of my games

Game 1
 vs a Dark elf army.
Dark Elves Supreme sorceres, general, lvl 4, sacrificial dagger, lifetaker, seal of Grond, Dark Magic, 345
Master, BSB, Cold One, Heavy Armour, Sea Dragon cloak, Shield, Lance, ring of hotek, 164 Master,Heavy Armour, Sea Dragon cloak, Shield,Dark Pegasus, Soulrender, Pendant of kaleth , 190 10 Repeater crossbowmen, 100
10 Repeater crossbowmen, 100
10 Repeater crossbowmen, 100
31 Warriors, champion, musician, banner, 201
5 Harpies, 55
9 Cold one Knights, champion, musician, banner, Banner of swiftness, 298
20 executioners, champion, musician, banner, 270
War Hydra, 175
Total 1998
OK I have only meat Dark elf once before. In 7 ed. Hmmmm Take it easy now. I started. My Iron blaster kills his Hydra. First shoot Yeah Leadbelcher take out five cold ones. Good start
Then it is payback.I quickly loose ogres. The rest of the cold ones and repeater crossbow take their prey. Master,on,Dark Pegasus is a hard model to face. That model alone take out a lot of ogres. But I finally grind it down. . Again it turned. I think he became too eager to go for a 20-0 victory. He throw his warriors and executioners into my ironguts.(This unit is almost on full strength with my BSB) They hold. In the next turn I can re charge him with my few ogres and wipe him out. Ahh Fantastic a 16-4 victory to me. It could not have started better. Yes yes yes here we go this is fun.
A good game my opponent was not so happy.I ignored it and keep smiling.

Game 2
from Dark to Light VS high elf this time, I am in full of confidence and have trust in my dice.
High Elfs Archmage, general, level 4, Lore of Life, Silver Wand, Talisman of Preservation (4+ Ward), Amulet of Light, 330
Mage, level 2, Lore of Fire, Seerstaff of Saphery, 165
Noble, Battle Standard Bearer, Great Weapon, Armour of Caledor, Dawnstone, 168
28 Spearmen, FCG, 277
10 Archers, Muscian, 115
10 Archers, 110
16 Swordmasters, FCG, The Other Trickster's Shard, Banner of Sorcery, 335
14 Swordmasters, Muscian, Standard Bearer, 228
10 White Lions, Standard Bearer, Banner of Eternal Flame, 172
Great Eagle, 50
Great Eagle, 50
High elf go first It is a very offensive High elf player the White lions rush forward together with eagles and Swordmasters. A unit of spearman’s and a archer unit move to the right table side? No ogres there? I did not understand this until later. Both sides took slowly some causality. In turn 5-6 He turned to defensive. He back off with all is units. I have no chance to charge him. Lost 9-11. I Am happy with that.¨ Nice game but I was surprised that he back off. He could have taken out some more of my units. I think he wanted to have his points in this game.

Game 3 from Light to Dark
Again Dark elfs.
Dark Elves Supreme Sorceress, General, Level 4, Shadow, Lifetaker, Sacrifical Dagger, The Guiding Eye, 340
Death Hag, BSB, Cauldron of Blood, 225
Master on Dark Pegasus, Heavy armour, Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak, Soulrender, Pendant of Khaeleth, 190
31 Dark Elf Repeater Crossbowmen, Shields, Musician, Guardmaster, 351
24 Dark Elf Warriors, Musician, Lordling, 153
10 Cold One Knights, FCG, Whip of Agony, Standard of Hag Graef, 370
21 Witch Elves, FCG, Banner of Murder, 260
5 Harpies, 55
5 Harpies, 55
Total: 1999
I have full of respect for this guy. He have a lot of experience. Take a deep breath now……, I did not want to have a shootout with his crossbows. So I take a moment before each deployment. He put crossbows on his far right side. So I decided to give him two big tempting targets The Iron Blaster and Morfang cavalry.
I started. All units forward I lined the mourfang for a charge at the crossbowman in the next turn. He took the bait and back with his crossbows. I chose to charge harpies instead. Iron blaster to some wounds on cold ones. Leadbelcher took out some harpies and a few warriors.
Dark elf. Witch Elves Master on Dark Pegasus straight ahead. He is very defensive with the rest. He moved his crossbowman forward and backwards. Ok… for me. He took a lot of shoots but only one few wound on the morfangs and Iron blaster. After some round of combat the Witch Elves and Master on Dark Pegasus take out my ogres with my BSB.
He focuses his spell on leadbelcher to lower their BS. I scrolled a mindrazor. Iron gut finished his cold ones.
I misfired the Ironblaster. It could not shoot for two turns. Both side miscast magic with some minor damage. Dark elf loses a magic level and a spell.
To the end this game was great and fun. A strange thing was that he keeps asking me about rules. I am not sure if he tries to test me and set me out. I answered politely. When an irrelevant rule question came I refer to the referee if it should be a case. He then stops asking. He’s plan did not work.
I have expected a more offensive player. But he guards his points well. In the end I lose the game with 9-11. Again I am very happy for that. It could be a lot of worse.

The end of day 1. My score is 34p. A lot more that I have expected. The mood is on top as I am very glad that I signed for this tournament. I stayed for a while and have small chats with other players. There was a lot of smiling people at the venue at the end of the day.

Before I left for the day I check game 4 pairing.

Game 4 from Dark to Light.
High elf again. Vs a player I have faced before. Lost 0-20 that game. Home and planning :o)

High Elves Archmage, General, LVL 4, Lore of Life, Book of Hoeth, 360
Noble, Mounted on a Great Eagle, BSB, Armour of Caledor, Dawnstone, Armour of Caledor, Great Weapon, Longbow, 228
20 Archers, Musician, Champion, 235
11 Archers, FCG Banner of Eternal Flame, 156
10Archers, Musician, 115
30 White Lions of Chrace, FCG, Banner of Swiftness, Amulet of Light, 510
14 Swordmasters of Hoeth, Blademaster, Musician, 228
7 Swordmasters of Hoeth, Blademaster, 117
Great Eagle, 50
Total: 1999
High Elf go first. This player position himself. No hurry to face me in combat. He got lore of life, No spell that can damage me. In the first turns he just released some few arrows but minor damages.
I faced my Iron blaster at his mage. I hit and he fails look out sir. Yes yes yes roll anything but one. Sure I rolled a one. Both player laughs at that. The game went on I have some luck and get Trollguts (RE-GEN)on a lot of my units. His sword master goes down easy.
White lions are a harder task I grinded them with leadbelcher. The morfangs and Iron blaster fell to Noble, Mounted on a Great Eagle.
White lions hacked the Leadbelcher. White lions is heavily reduced but I still fear them with some “T” boost and so on. I retreaded Lost 8-12. Yet Another great game. I played the game for points saving.
Game 5 From Light to Sand
Tomb king this time T
omb Kings Liche High Priest, Hierophant, extra level, earthing rod, Lore of Nehekhara –, 235
Liche Priest, extra level, dispel scroll, lore of light, 130
17 Skeleton Archers, champion, 112
16 Skeleton Archers, champion, 106
3 Chariots, 165
5 Skeleton Horse Archers, 70
5 Skeleton Horse Archers, 70
War Sphinx, Fiery Breath, 230
32 Tomb Guard, champion, standard, musician, banner of swiftness, 397
Tomb Scorpion, 85
Necrolith Colossus, additional hand weapon, 175
Casket of Souls, 135
Screaming Skull Catapult, 90
For the first time I felt that I have the upper hand. I have to be careful. Don’t judge the dog on his master.
He deploys almost everything in his right corner. I face the Ironblastar at his catapult. Aim the iron guts and ogres for his corner. His chariots march forward and charge my ironguts, Easy prey for my guts. His cavalry was slain by my morfang and ogres. He use spells to take out my Saber tusks. I was glad for that. The tomb scorpion made some troublers but the leadbelcher take it out.
The War Sphinx and Morfang cavalry duel. The morrfang wins but was later destroyed by the spell from the casket. His catapult hit my leadbelcher few wounds. Ironblaste finished the catapult mid in the game.
The big clash. My ogres face his tomb guard and the colossus. Some tough rounds The ogers is victorious. Here I have my luck for today my ogre unit is down to one singel wound. Puhhh
In this game I miscast my Slaughtermaster to a level 1 My Iron blaster Misfired to a chariot.
My only looses is Morfang cavalry and  three saber tusks.
Victory 16-4
My opponent look little stressed I try to calm him with some bad jokes and small talk. It seems that it calm him a down. So from turn two onwards he told some bad jokes too. It was great . We agreed about a rematch soon.

A short summary.
Totals score of 58 made me to the 22 palace of 76. I am very pleased with that. Way over what I have expected.

Debrief on my army.
I feel that the Iron guts, ogre and leadlecher perform very well.

Iron blaster I am not sure, I take it to take out monsters. I only face one. It did is work there but in the other game I am not so sure. I have to rethink to the next 2000p battle.

Morfang surprised me. They became a magnet to arrow and direct spell and other things that flew thorough in the air. I was worried to a start. Then I was very glad that they took the hits, they have a lot of armor. And they were my cheapest combat unit. :o) Yes they did a lot of combat and damaged too. I have to re think their role in the army.

Bruiser BSB. Perform well. Nothing more to do there for the moment.

Slaughtermaster, I struggle to tool him when play testing. I was not satisfied in the end, but it was the best that I could do. For 2000p games I will rethink the 385 p. I can have cheaper magic…….
Saber tusk. They stay.

I add some in game pictures below.

I finish off with this
I get Total five great games. After 1000 dice are rolled. The luck was up and down for me and my opponents I am glad that I enter this event.
It became A Perfect weekend

Warhammer

Finally, I have finnished my Warhammer ruin. The ruin is a standard GW Dreadstone Blight. Witch I sprayed whit Chaos black and dry brushed with Dawnstone. Finalished it all off with Badar black. Hope it will look nice on my table.
Yesterday I finally place the castle on my gamming table and it fits the table quite well.
